How We Choose the Best Mechanics

Our ranking methodology is transparent, merit-based, and completely independent. No shop can pay for a higher ranking.

Four Steps to Every Listing

1
Research

We identify independent auto repair shops through industry databases, community recommendations, and local research. Chain shops and franchises are excluded from the start.

2
Verify

We cross-reference Google Business Profile data, website information, and public records to confirm business details, licensing, and operational status.

3
Evaluate

Shops are scored on Google rating, review volume, review consistency, years in business, specializations, and community reputation.

4
Profile

Top-scoring shops receive detailed editorial profiles based on real research — not templated content. Every write-up is unique to that shop.

What We Look For

Google Rating

Minimum 4.0 stars. We weight consistency over time, not just the current number.

Review Volume

Shops with 50+ reviews demonstrate consistent service quality across many customers.

Independence

We only list independent shops. No chains, no franchises, no corporate-owned locations.

Years in Business

Established shops with proven track records earn higher placement.

Specializations

Shops with clear expertise — European, diesel, hybrid — get recognized for what they do best.

Transparency

Shops that offer digital inspections, upfront pricing, and clear communication score higher.

What We Don’t Do

We don’t accept payment for rankings
We don’t let shops write their own profiles
We don’t use automated or AI-generated reviews
We don’t list shops we haven’t researched
We don’t hide our methodology

Common Questions

Can a shop pay to be ranked higher?
No. Featured listings get more visibility, but ranking position is based entirely on merit. A featured shop with 4.2 stars will always appear below a non-featured shop with 4.8 stars.
How do I get my shop listed?
Submit your shop through our directory. We’ll verify your information and add a basic listing. Premium profiles are available for shops that want a detailed editorial write-up.
How often do you update rankings?
We review ratings and data quarterly. Shops that drop below our standards are removed.
Why isn’t my favorite shop listed?
We may not have discovered them yet. Submit a recommendation and we’ll research them for inclusion.
What if the information on a listing is wrong?
Shop owners can claim their listing to update details. You can also contact us at [email protected] to report errors.
